Disney+ is already losing some of its movies

Some beloved films have vanished from Disney’s new streaming service less than two months after its launch.

The movies were pulled despite Disney+ previously telling news outlets that the service would not have a “rotating slate” of licensed films each month like its streaming rivals Netflix and Hulu, which regularly remove certain titles and add others.

A dozen titles including “Home Alone,” “Dr. Dolittle,” “The Sandlot” and “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” were missing from the platform as of Friday. Eight of them abruptly disappeared at the start of the new year without any explanation from Disney, according to one Reddit user who first noted the changes Wednesday.

Disney did not immediately confirm how many titles it has removed, why it pulled them or whether they’ll be available for streaming in the future. Some reports Friday attributed the lineup changes to issues with existing licensing deals. The titles will reportedly return to Disney+ after those deals expire, according to entertainment and gaming web site Polygon.

Disney also added a host of new content to the service this month, including the animated TV series “The Proud Family,” the 2003 film “Holes” and “Cool Runnings,” the 1993 movie based on the Jamaican national bobsled team’s Winter Olympics run.

The $6.99-a-month streaming service has exploded since its Nov. 12 launch despite a rash of early technological glitches. The service racked up more than 10 million signups in its first day, and its app was downloaded more than 15.5 million times in the first two weeks.
