Disney is on track to earn $10 billion in global ticket sales this year — smashing the studio industry’s previous record of $7.6 billion set in 2016.
Through Sunday, the Mouse House generated box-office receipts of $3.28 billion in North America and $6.7 billion overseas. The $9.997 billion total sets up the studio to cross the $10-billion mark on Monday.
Disney first blew past the 2016 record in July, buoyed by the successes of “Avengers: Endgame,” which ranks as the highest-grossing film of all time with $2.79 billion in ticket sales, and “The Lion King,” with a box office of $1.6 billion.
Disney’s other contributions to the $1-billion club this year were thanks to “Captain Marvel,” which earned $1.13 billion, “Toy Story 4, with $1.07 billion in sales, and “Aladdin” with $1.05 billion.
“Frozen 2,” which ended the weekend with receipts of $920 million, is a shoo-in to be this year’s sixth $1-billion winner from Disney.
The back-to-back hits come ahead of the much-anticipated release of “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” on Dec. 20.
Disney, which merged with Twenty First Century Fox earlier this year, “has created the blueprint for the perfect year at the box office,” Paul Dergarabedian, a senior media analyst at Comscore, told The Post. “They’ve done it by creating a slate of films in 2019 that was the manifestation of their biggest brands — all working perfectly to create movies that were irresistible to global audiences.”
Disney’s $71.3 billion acquisition of Fox gave it control of the film studio behind hits like “Titanic” and “Avatar,” and reduced the number of Hollywood studios to five from six.
