Ex-Yankee John Wetteland indicted on child-sex charges

Nearly two months after being arrested, former Yankee pitcher John Wetteland was indicted Thursday on charges of aggravated sexual assault of a child.

Wetteland, 52, who was the 1996 World Series MVP with the Yankees, is accused of forcing a relative to perform sex acts on him multiple times beginning in 2004, when the child was 4, according to Texas authorities.

Wetteland posted $25,000 bond after his January arrest and was released after being taken into custody.

He retired from baseball in 2000 and briefly served as the Washington Nationals’ pitching coach in 2006 before a midseason firing.

He later served as a high-school baseball coach at Liberty Christian School in Argyle, Texas, and then as the Seattle Mariners’ bullpen coach for two seasons.

While with Seattle, Wetteland was hospitalized for what police thought was a suicidal situation, although the Mariners later said it was because of an elevated heart rate.
